DeFi Developer News 1/8-1/13: Polygon zkBuilder Decentralized Grants, GHO Virtual Hackathon, OP Canyon Upgrade, Arbitrum Orbit with Celestia DA, ...

Grants 💰

  • Polygon Labs introduced the zkBuilder Decentralized Grants Program, designed to support, fund, and bootstrap DeFi builders on Polygon zkEVM.
The grants program, offered through Polygon Village, will be one of the many resources coming to builders on Polygon zkEVM.

Hackathons and Workshops 🧑‍💻

  • Gnosis is a community-run, EVM L1.
The first Gnosis Hackathon of 2024 has started. The hackathon runs for 4 weeks (08/01/2024 - 05/02/2024). After the hackathon, community members will vote on the best projects. Submissions will be considered based on originality and usability.
  • Solana Foundation and mtnDAO are holding the 2024 v5 Summit. mtnDAO Summit is a month-long event set to take place in Salt Lake City from February 1st to 29th, offering developers a unique experience of building and collaboration.
  • GHO is a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin native to the Aave protocol. ETHGlobal and AaveGrants are hosting the first GHO virtual hackathon from January 12 to 24, 2024 with 75,000 in prizes.

Infrastructure 🏗

Ethereum

  • Ethereum devs will launch Dencun on Goerli at 6:32 UTC on January 17, 2024. Dencun will be Goerli's last upgrade before core teams stop supporting it. Assuming the Goerli upgrade goes well, the Sepolia and Holesky testnets will activate Dencun over the next few weeks.
  • Lodestar, an open-source Ethereum Consensus (Eth2) client & TypeScript ecosystem, has released v1.14.0-rc.2 with some additional inclusions for users going into the Deneb hard fork on Goerli

L2s

  • OP Labs activated the Canyon network upgrade on Superchain Mainnets, including OP Mainnet. The Canyon upgrade includes Shanghai and Capella hardfork support and several minor bug fixes. Canyon also makes some OP Stack-specific changes.
  • Starknet launched the v0.13.0 upgrade with the introduction of V3 Transactions (STRK as gas token), Reduced Transaction Fees, and Future STRK-specific Features.
  • Polygon introduces the Amoy testnet, a Sepolia-anchored testnet for Polygon PoS. Based on community feedback, Amoy has been launched as a low-stakes environment to build, test, and break things.
  • Polygon introduces Libre, a financial institution-focused L2 built with Polygon CDK. Libre will go live in Q1 2024 and has partnered with several top-tier global distributors.
  • Parallel Network works with Conduit to power Parallel Network's rollups with Arbitrum's orbit stack under the hood. Parallel is built as an omni-chain L2 that unifies liquidity from any chain into one place.

L3s

  • XAI, a gaming-focused L3 blockchain, launches on Arbitrum with a live bridge for users to transfer assets from Arbitrum One to XAI.

Cosmos

  • Cosmos introduces Partial Set Security, an enhancement to Interchain Security that will allow only a subset of Hub validators to run a physical node for each consumer chain, while still allowing each consumer chain to be secured by the full stake of the Hub.
  • Berachain, an EVM-equivalent L1 built on the Cosmos SDK and powered by Proof of Liquidity, launched Artio Testnet.

Data Availability (DA)

  • ZK gaming L2 Hypr L2 is integrating with Celestia Data Availability to improve the developer experience of game devs in addition to the user experience of players.

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs)

  • Immutable launched “Passport” in playable games and marketplaces. Passport allows players to use identities and assets with a universal profile across multiple platforms.

Tooling 🛠

Ethereum

  • wevm, a TypeScript tooling for Ethereum, introduced Vocs Alpha - a Minimal Documentation Framework, powered by React + Vite.
  • Shadow, an on-chain data indexing and analytics tool, released "test run" mode. Test run mode makes it easier to
    * Iterate on your shadow contract changes
    * Verify that you're getting the data you expect
    * Inspect particularly complex transactions

L2s

  • Media firm Fox Corporation collaborated with Polygon Labs to launch Verify, a blockchain-based media platform. Verify tracks cryptographically signed media and negotiates content licensing deals with artificial intelligence firms.
  • Arbitrum Orbit chains can permissionlessly adopt new upgrades prior to DAO voting if they wish. New upgrades that are in development include
    • BOLD - Next-gen fraud proofs allowing anyone to validate Arbitrum chains.
    • Stylus - Build smart contracts in Rust, C, and C++ with full composability with traditional EVM languages, like Solidity.
    • Timeboost - A modified transaction ordering policy for chains based on the Arbitrum stack and for those who utilize @EspressoSys’s shared sequencing protocol.
  • AltLayer announces Nitrogen, a public Arbitrum Orbit testnet using Celestia as modular DA. Nitrogen is secured by working Arbitrum Nitro fraud proofs and integrates with Celestia Blobstream on Arbitrum Sepolia.
  • zkSync transactions are now available on Etherscan.

Oracles

  • Cross-chain oracle Ojo is building an oracle for the modular ecosystem with Celestia underneath. L2s that leverage the Celestia DA layer will be able to permissionlessly and securely access accurate price data for all ecosystem-native assets.

Bitcoin L2s

  • SatoshiVM is a "Bitcoin ZK Rollup Layer 2 solution" with ZK EVM, ZK Rollup, ZK Fraud Proofs, Data Availability, and BTC Native Gas.

Solana

  • Solana unveiled its 2024 developer roadmap: developers will have access to improved toolings: Token extensions, Firedancer & additional validator clients, and more.

Research 🧑‍🔬

  • SpearbitDAO released the video of a seminar on Exploring Ethereum History using ZK. The speaker Yi highlights how to cache Ethereum block hashes back to genesis in a Merkle mountain range on-chain and verify proofs against this cache and much more.
  • trent.eth on Twitter published "Capital and enclosure in software commons: Linux & Ethereum", talking about
    - intros to Common, commons
    - commons enclosure/capture
    - how the Linux + Ethereum commons are structured
    - how capital engages w/ these commons

Bug Bounties 🐞

  • Ensuro is a blockchain protocol building a decentralized capital provider for insurance risk.
      • Smart Contract: 1,000-30,000
  • Teahouse Finance is a multi-strategy DeFi investment platform dedicated to secure and flexible asset management.
    • Bounty
      • Smart Contract: 5,000-15,000
