DeFi Dev News Weekly - Aztec Sandbox Program, OpenZeppelin Access Manager Explorer, Renzo Restaking Token $250k Bounty

Grants and Accelerators 💰

  • Aztec launches the Sandbox Alpha Program to onboard privacy-first developers. No prior experience with Noir, Aztec, or ZK is necessary, but alpha partners will need to have exceptional technical skills, ability to commit 15-20 hours a week for ~4-6 weeks, and regular check-ins with the Aztec Labs core team
  • Starknet Foundation introduces Devonomics, a pilot program for Starknet devs. Devonomics will reward devs with 1,600+ ETH ($3.5M+), that’s ~10% of all Starknet fees from launch until Nov 30th.
  • Hosted by Solana-based protocols Cypher and marginfi, mtnDAO will launch a month-long hacker house set to take place in Salt Lake City from February 1st to 29th, offering developers a unique experience of building and collaboration.

Infrastructure 🏗

Ethereum

  • MigaLabs releases a new version of Monitor ETH dashboard, providing a comprehensive display of ISP distribution and staking entities distribution.

L2s

  • Scroll L2 opened up the claiming period for Origins NFT collection. Devs or users that deployed a smart contract on Scroll Mainnet before December 9th are eligible to claim.
  • Fantom launched the Sonic builders testnet, with tools for developers to launch dApps on Sonic technology.
  • Eiger announces the Rust RPC client for Celestia. Through this work, Eiger created Lumina, a Rust implementation of Celestia’s light node optimized for sampling efficiently in the browser. Lumina brings the power of Celestia’s Data Availability Sampling to everyone, allowing users to directly verify Celestia instead of relying on centralized gateways like Infura.
  • Cronos Labs launched Cronos zkEVM testnet. The testnet is a hyperchain utilizing ZK Stack, a modular, open-source framework leveraging zkSync’s code, that is designed to build custom ZK-powered L2s and L3s (referred to as hyperchains).
  • zkSync developers can now build with Chainlink price feeds. The integration of Boojum, zkSync’s new prover, along with its unique state difference architecture, puts zkSync on the path to being thousands of times cheaper for Oracles.
  • Taiko releases v0.25.0 with Improved contract proxy and deployments, the ERCVault issue is fixed, the protocol code is ready and locked for auditing, and internal A6 devnet will be released soon.
  • Aztec's core circuits are now written in Noir. In general, using Noir makes the job of a ZK developer simpler: Noir moves the responsibility of proving system attack surfaces toward cryptographers and optimization attack surfaces onto compiler experts.
  • Conduit adds support for Celestia. Rollups can now reduce transaction fees by >100x by using Celestia’s modular DA, making it viable for anyone to deploy an Ethereum L2.
  • Eclipse launches its testnet. Eclipse is an Ethereum L2 powered by Solana Virtual Machine (SVM). The first 1000 developers who deploy on Eclipse will have their address whitelisted for exclusive access to a commemorative NFT — dropping with Eclipse Mainnet Beta early next year.
  • Chainlink Data Feeds are now on Polygon zkEVM, allowing devs to securely build dApps that combine reliable price data with lightning-fast execution.
  • Celestia announces that it will become an option for blockchain builders using Polygon CDK, so developers will be able to use the data availability solution when using Polygon's tech to design and set up their own layer-2 networks.
  • Astria EVM launches on devnet. The EVM uses Celestia for DA + the shared sequencer network for fast, censorship-resistant block production, the Austria EVM overcomes limitations faced by other EVMs

Bridging

  • Layer Zero V2 will enable app owners to have complete control over their Security Stack with the ability to choose and combine third-party Decentralized Verifier Networks (DVNs). These are off-chain networks of verifiers that come to a consensus and attest to the validity of messages.
LayerZero V2 is live on 42 testnets, and Mainnet launch is slated for January 2024.

Security 🛡

  • UBI protocol GoodDollar was exploited and lost ~625K. The attack is made possible due to a lack of verification for untrusted user input and the absence of reentrancy protection.
  • Ledger ex-dev was phishing scammed and the attacker pushed malicious code to exploit Ledger’s library on GitHub, causing over 600K user loss.

Tooling 🛠

Ethereum

  • OpenZeppelin introduces Access Manager Explorer, a comprehensive UI for exploring smart contract permissions. Users can connect their wallets or search addresses to see what permissions they hold, and the explorer will show roles, members, guardians, admins, delays, contracts, etc.
  • Smock Foundry is a plugin for foundry that automatically generates Solidity mocks for every contract in your project. Remember how Smock made testing in Hardhat 10x times easier? You can now also use it in Foundry.

L2s

  • Initia Foundation introduces OPinit Stack, a VM-agnostic optimistic rollup framework that enables teams to build Minitia L2s in EVM, MoveVM, or WasmVM.

Shardeum

  • Shardeum L1 introduces Shardeum Dapp Boilerplate. A ready-to-go one-stop solution for developers to get their hands straight into code & an easily configurable boilerplate repo to get started.

Aptos

  • Aptos dev introduces a new TypeScript SDK that offers strongly typed APIs and Interfaces, a more intuitive and understandable transaction builder flow, resolution of the API queries to the required destination service, full nested serialization and deserialization support, Move sub-classes to easily serialize and deserialize Move types and customization and configurations support.
